PROCESS
LOCATION
The first and most critical step in our process is the location. The room, the setting, the landscape. This provides a world for us to capture, first and foremost. Some are chosen for their look, some chosen for their sound. In the best cases, they’re chosen equally for both. This is a process that often takes time, and lots of planning. Many of the locations we choose have limited infrastructure for doing what we do, and it requires much effort to bring in the required equipment for us to work effectively. Once the location is chosen, and planning complete, we set up and begin our work.
RECORDING
The primary consideration of every recording we do, is to capture the performances in a rich, colourful, and immersive way, that appeals to even the most discerning audiophiles. We do consider Concurrents to be an audiophile art house, after all. Every project we do is recorded with the utmost care and intention by founder D. James Goodwin, using both vintage and modern technology to create a rich sonic environment, that captivates the listener and compels them to enter the world of the performers. Eschewing the pedantic and boring dogma of the old analog vs digital debates, we choose to record to digital media in the highest resolutions, both to minimize noise & inconsistency, and to reduce the environmental impact of magnetic tape use and manufacture.
All of our projects are recorded to Avid Pro Tools, at high bit and sample rates, using both vintage and modern valve microphones, and preamplifiers. We strive to use the shortest signal paths possible to maintain signal purity and fidelity.
Each project is mixed and mastered using the very best analogue equipment for utmost clarity and rendering of coloration and atmosphere.
FILMING
The next consideration is the visual language of the film that accompanies a recording. Every so often, a decision is made to focus strictly on the recording, and to forego filming. This is for a variety of reasons. But in most cases, a film will accompany the record. Using digital capture, Goodwin and his crew often employ vintage lenses and techniques to create a visual language that is specific to each performer and location. Film is a great love of ours here at Concurrents, and the opportunity to bring our audience into a greater cinematic landscape with the performers is an honour we take very seriously.
RELEASE
Each project is released as a direct digital download via our store. With each purchase, you’ll receive your choice of various audio formats, as well as links to view and download the film companion. You will also receive many extras, including notes from the artists, and a technical compendium which includes a detailed list of the microphones and accompanying equipment used, for those interested in such things.
For a limited time, each project will only be available here, but will eventually be released to Bandcamp, Qobuz, Tidal, and other streaming services that share our core values of artist revenues and fidelity.
By subscribing to our mailing list, you’ll get first notice of new releases, bonus content, and best of all, we won’t bother you about other irrelevant nonsense.
